Shipping lines raise rates
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 25. Three New Zealand shipping companies have now announced freight rate increases.
The New Zealand Export Line, which runs the Wellington Exporter on a six-weekly service from Auckland to Melanesia, has increased its rates by 25 per cent According to Maritime Services, Ltd, managing agents for the line, the service has recently failed to break even. However, tonnages are expected to increase slowly. The second stage of the Tasman rate increase will come into effect bn April 18, according to the Union Steam Ship Company. Last October the company negotiated with its shippers a 12i per cent increase for roll-on cargoes and a 154 P er cent increase for conventional cargoes. The company planned to increase the roll-on rates by 12 per cent from January 18.but the price freeze delayed this until February 15. The second phase will come into force on April 18 —2l per cent on roll-on cargoes and 3j per cent on conventional cargoes.
The Holm Shipping Company announced yesterday
that it would increase its freight rates to Noumea and the Chatham Islands from April 5. In Nelson, the two shipping companies offering coastal services to that port, have no intention of raising their freight rates, according to the Press Association today.
The Anchor Shipping Company said it had raised its rates on February 15 and hoped to hold them. The Karamea Shipping Company put up its rates at the same time.
