HIGHLIGHTS OF TRACKWORK Frosty Blue ready for good race

Frosty Blue should not be the least of the chances in the Dunedin Jockey Club’s Jamefield Improvers’ Handicap at Wingatui tomorrow. The former northerner was taken south yesterday after a satisfactory trial on the plough on his home track at Riccarton. He had a good weight up, with B. Pelling as his rider, when paired with the two-year-old, Majestic (P. Smith), from near the five furlongs. He ran clear immediately and won the trial comfortably.

Frosty Blue ran his last three furlongs in 41 1-5 and could have bettered that time with little trouble.

Later Bannock, a last-start winner at Ashburton, sprinted three furlongs in 38. He was ridden by O. Anning. Pretentious (A. Eastwood) finished his work by running in from the three furlongs in 42. Five-furlong trials from the starting gate on the outside of the course proper occupied, much of the training. Kathy Come Home, from R .B. Taggart’s stable, was a dear winner of the first heat from Lady Attack, a Hawa filly bought at the Hazlett sale by a patron of P. H. Jones’s stable. Bev Leigh, a three-year-old Eastern Nip filly prepared by B. S. Finlayson, won the second heat narrowly from Siren, with Awocato third. Siren, a sister of Just Ace, and a winner in the North Island last season, is being trained by P. H. Jones for a Christchurch syndicate. Gyrate, a maiden performer, shaped like an improver in beating the stablemates, Warrington and Carafin, in the third heat. The. fourth heat was notable mainly for a strong finishing run by Aeolian, which carried him past his stablemate, Chilli Bean, in the last few strides. Aoeliari was several lengths from the lead half-way through; the trial. AWAPUM Marchere confirmed her favouritism for the Sires* Produce Stakes tomorrow with a dazzling gallop yesterday. The filly ran near record time for six furlongs, yet left no doubts that she could have gone faster in the straight. Kaukapakapa was also at his best and looks sure to be a leading contender for the first leg of the T.A.B. double. He has improved considerably since racing at Trentham. The tracks were in good order, the plough having been watered. Working 50ft from the rails on the course proper Marchere ran away from Triple Shot in the straight and completed six furlongs in Imin 15 2-ssec. She was kept just behind her companion for the first half-mile, but swept past him in a stride when they turned for home to complete the final three furlongs in 37sec. She was revelling in her work passing the post and left no doubts in the minds of the large crowd of watchers that it was a winning trial for the rich two-year-old race tomorrow. Long Shot was too good for Meditate over seven furlongs in Imin 32sec and had something in reserve over the last three in 39 2-ssec. He is in good order for the Manawatu Mile. Fashion is likely to start favourite in the Te Matai Handicap. Papahu was sent alone over six furlongs in Imin 18sec. He ran on well over the final three in 38sec. First Up went over the same course recording Imin 18 3-ssec for the distance but sprinting fast over the last three in 37sec. Young Ida was not extended to beat Copper Royal at the end of half a mile in 50 4-ssec. She could have done better than 37 l-ssec for the final three furlongs and looks an outside chance in the principal event. Polpeflro took the time honours for five furlongs when she scampered over the course in Imin 3 3-ssec without being fully extended over the final three in 38 2-ssec. Another Stakes candidate, Glad Eye, went easily over half a mile in 51 2-ssec. Grizzly looked well as he went out to gallop, but he was restrained to 56 2-ssec for half a mile. Sir Quetzal took Imin 7sec for the last five furlongs of his work. Tupelo was too good for Lovely Honey this morning running the six furlongs in Imin 18sec without being kicked up over the last three in 38 l-ssec-Kaukapakapa was the star trialist on the plough. He took only Imin 16 2-ssec for six furlongs and was doing better than Ayub Khan, which joined in at the half-mile, over the final three in 38 2-ssec. This three-year-old has worked exceptionally well this week and looks the best of the local candidates in the Manawatu Mile. Silver Knight was shading Aristoc at the end of seven furlongs in Imin 33 4-ssec. They did not have much pace on for the urst furlong, but came over the

IN’CARGILL Stormy Seas, one of the early favourites for the Provincial Handicap at Wingatui tomorrow, has been scratched. The trainer; R. F. Pankhurst, is dissatisfied with his weight of S.O. “Shewetta still retains most of her brilliance, and I do not want to break Stormy Sea’s heart by chasing her,” he said. “I am not trying to be too critical of the handicapper, but £ think it unwise to start him

against Shewetta when he is only in receipt of 101 b from her. “Shewetta lias won over $14,000 in stakes, Including the Great Easter, Stewards’ and just about every other big sprint in the South Island. My fellow has been beaten a few times lately in open company.”

HASTINGS Kirrama, which is to run an exhibition galldp at Awapuni tomorrow over about six furlongs, has made a complete recovery from the soreness that worried him recently, and he will be close to his peak when he tackles the Stars Travel International next week. Lilt, Partner and Leon worked well yesterday. A dense fog blanketed the course and many gallops went untimed. Yesterday, Kirrama (C. Hercock) ran seven furlongs on the course proper In Imin 30sec, the Last three in 40sec. He enjoyed his work and pulled up well. He should be right at his best with another gallop or two. Lilt (R. him at peak for the Awapuni Gold Cup. Quick S'al ran three furlongs in 39sec, and Black Suit, ridden by R. Panapa) took Imin 21 4-ssec for six furlongs, the last three in 41 4-ssec. Tills was a good run, but Lionaire may not run at Awapuni tomorrow. Partner (L. No Thanks has improved with her race the first day at Awapuni and will not be out of her depth in the Sires’ Produce Stakes. After an overnight soaking the course proper provided easy footing and was cutting out 40 feet from the fence. Ball Boy, which worked well on Tuesday, turned in another pleasing trial for the Dunedin Stakes when he was more impressive than Capasco over half a mile. With at least two stone the worst of the weights, Ball Boy had two lengths to spare on Capasco at the finish, clocking 52sec, the last two furlongs in 26 2-ssec. over half a mile in 53 2-ssec, the last three furlongs in 4<)sec. Effgee, which has a little heat in his near front fetlock Joint, was not out for time over three furlongs In 43 4-ssec. Working alone, he was hard held by H. Warren throughout.
