Minor rally by mining shares in Australia

There was a minor rally among Australian mining shares yesterday. Trading was light and mixed with the speculative nickels, which lost ground after Leopold’s suspension, showing the best gains.

Eastmet and Glendale soared to their highest points of the year on rumours of a nickel find, but lost most of their gains after the report of disseminated sulphides on their joint prospect in Western Australia. Eastmet peaked at 130 c but closed at 85c, a net gain of 50c while Glendale touched 125 c before closing 38c higher at 60c. Tasminex rose 15c to 130 c, and Spargos jumped 34c to 210 c on its nickel assay report before profit-takers brought it down 6c on the day at 170 c. Westmix, Kia Ora, Seicast and Whim Creek were among the issues to slip. Poseidon lost 50c at 3750 c. Established miners also profited by the upturn. M.I.M. gained 15c at 385 c, and C.R.A. 20c at 1220 c after the Bougainville float details. New B.H. was also 20c higher. Peko rose 15c to 1085 c. Oils were mixed. Ampol ex rose 5c at 130 c on its offer for A.O.G. which also improved 2c. Endeavour, Woodside and A.O.D. also made headway but Associated Freney was 10c down at 80c, and Petroleum Securities was 5c down at 25c. Supervised securities, which underwrote the public issue of Leopold, lost 50c at 700 c. Hooper Bailey gained 70c at 230 c in an otherwise quiet industrial market. B.H.P. was unchanged but C.S.R., Austim, Dunlop, Grace Bros, and Boral were we&ker* Brambles was only marginally better after its higher profit. SYDNEY Sales Ampol, 64; Ansett, 70; A.W.A., 123; Ass.
