Polish bishops’ declaration

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Cdpyrlght) WARSAW, March 24. Poland’s Roman Catholic bishops have given a warning in a pastoral letter that the falling birth-rate is threatening the nation’s future. The letter, signed by the Polish Episcopate headed by Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski, blames the decline on economic conditions, abortion legislation, and officiallypropagated birth control. To halt the trend, the letter calls on the Communist authorities to take immediate action by creating better housing conditions and by giving working women more time to look after their families.

In an attack on abortion, the letter says that doctors and other health workers must remember that life, once begun, must not be prevented from growing. It adds that other Communist States—East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria, and more recently, the Soviet Union—have recently become aware of the danger of insufficient population growth, and have taken action to remedy it.
