Horses to leave for U.S.

'•The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND. Gipsyon and Pakray will be aent to their owner, Mr Hastings Harcourt, in California, this week. Both are booked to be flown to the United States tomorrow. A three-year-old colt, by Oncidiutn from Gipsy Dancer, Gipsyon had his last New Zealand race for Mr Harcourt when he came home promisingly to finish fourth in the Lamb Memorial at Paeroa last Sunday. Pakray, a little-tried two-year-old colt, by Pakistan II from Lochray, had only his second race when he finished unplaced in the Fathers Memorial on the first day of the Paeroa meeting. Gipsyon has been trained lately by K. T. Cotter at Te Rapa and Pakray by C. M. Jillings, who formerly prepared Gipsyon. Gipsyon won at Ellerslie last

winter and* gained further attention when runner-up to Panzer Chief, at level weights, at Te Rapa last September. He resumed racing after a spell with a sprint on the first day of the Paeroa meeting. Pakray, a big half-brother of Tomray, has shown sufficient speed in his training to be a young horse of considerable promise. According to Mr E. L. Haydon, of Auckland, who manages the racing affairs of Mr Harcourt in New Zealand, the reason for the horses being sent to America is a recent big increase in the stakes offered for middle-distance and staying races on grass tracks. Mr Harcourt and his American trainer have been greatly impressed by the staying ability of Daryl’s Joy and are hopeful Gipsyon and Pakray will become good distance runners.
