F.O.L. declines to intercede

(N.Z. Press Association) TIMARU, March 24. The executive of the Federation of Labour has declined to give a ruling on the dispute on the Timaru waterfront over the handling of cargo on and off the Unit Shipping Company’s barge Unit Shipper.

South Canterbury members of the Drivers’ Union believe they should drive their trucks on and off the barge, but the Timaru Waterside Workers* Union says that this Is the job of waterside workers.

The secretary of the Drivers* Federation (Mr W. J. Welsh) had asked the

F.O.L. to consider the matter.

Mr Welsh said he was endeavouring to arrange a meeting in Wellington of the parties involved possibly next week.

A special meeting of South Canterbury members of the Drivers’ Union will be held in Timaru tomorrow.

When the Unit Shipper was berthed at Timaru last week about 2500 tons of cargo was discharged and loaded by forklifts driven by waterside workers and Timaru Harbour Board staff.

The Unit Shipper is due on another voyage from Onehunga next week.
