Dimmock at centre BASKETBALL DEBUT
The 6ft 6in New Zealand trialist, H. Dimmock, will make his debut for the Canterbury men’s basketball team in the opening representative match of the season at Nelson on Saturday.
The match, being played to mark the official opening of Nelson’s new stadium, is not part of the official list of fixtures for the season but it should give a useful indication to the province’s prospects.
Dimmock, who until this season has played all his basketball in Nelson, has moved to Christchurch and joined the Y.M.C.A. club. He is expected to play most of his basketball in the centre position, although Canterbury with 6ft 6in R. Millard and 6ft 4in J. Fairweather, is particularly well endowed in this position. The Canterbury selectorcoach (Mr D. G. Dempsey) said yesterday that the team to play at Nelson would not necessarily be the Canterbury side for the season.
“I have invited the senior members of last year’s nationals team more or less as a reward for their efforts in the past,” he added. Two, G. Nobbs and A. Hounseli, had not been available and the 1970 captain, J.
Culliford, has moved to Dun edin. M. Clements, Dimmocl and Fairweather had beei brought in as replacements. The team is: Clements Dimmock, Millard (Y.M.C.A.) Fairweather (Checkers), T Guthrie, K. Hessell, P. Stiglej (University); K. Luxton (High School Old Boys).
