SEAT-BELT USE

Compulsion supported

Support for the compulsory wearing of seat-belts was given by members of the Christchurch Metropolitan Road Safety Committee last evening. Until there was legislation, the Road Safety Committee had “no show” of doing anything about getting people to wear seat-belts, the chairman (Mr R. S. Mayer) said. There was a precedent for compulsory wearing of seat belts in the legislation requiring the compulsory wearing of crash-helmets on motor-cycles, Mr D. L. Hogan said. This legislation, when it was introduced, had been very quickly accepted.
