Stones put on line

(N.Z. Preu Auociation) AUCKLAND, March 24. Two men placed stones on the railway lines near Green Lane, Auckland, last night and watched a train pass over them, crushing the stones and causing indentations in the lines, the police said in the Magistrate’s Court today. Peter Drew Barlow, aged 21, a machine operator, and John David Zainey, aged 19, a storeman-packer, admitted doing an act which might have endangered lives of persons travelling on the railway. They were fined $lOO each.

Calling the action “the height of stupidity,” Mr A. A Coates, S.M., said the charge, laid under the Government Railways Act, 1947, carried a maximum sentence of six months gaol. The police found the men crouched over the line, having placed more lines of stones—one 17yd long, the other 21yd long—on the lines. They said they wanted to see what would happen.
