New worry for Peru

(N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) LIMA, March 24. Floods have brought new misery to Peru as efforts continue to find the bodies of victims of the avalanche that wiped out an Andean mining camp last Thursday, killing an estimated 245 people. Torrential rain has caused rivers to flood in a wide area of northern Peru, destroying crops, roads and homes. Two people are known to have been drowned and a third is missing after another avalanche, which has blocked a river in the state of Huanuco, 180 miles north-east of Lima. Government agencies and volunteer groups continue to take food and medicine to the 410 survivors of Thurs(iay’s avalanche. Only 60 bodies have been recovered, and of those only 37 have been identified. In many cases, entire ' families were killed, and no-one remains who can identify their bodies. Officials estimate that about 150,000 or 200,000 tons of rock and earth, loosened by snow and heavy seasonal rains, plunged down the mountain into Lake Yanahuarina.
