Bid to scale Mount Everest

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) KATMANDU, Mar. 24. The international expedition on Mount Everest has reached its 17,800 ft-high base camp at the foot of the treacherous Khumbu ice fall, according to a radio message received in Katmandu. The site was selected yesterday by an advance reconnaissance team comprising Mr John Evans, aged 32, of Houston, Texas, and two Everest veterans, Major H. V. Bahuguna, of Dehra Dun, India, and Mr Naomi Uemera, aged 29, of Tokyo. Major Bahuguna was a member of the Indian team which climbed Everest (29,028 feet, and the world’s highest mountain) in 1965. Last year Mr Uemera became the first Japanese to scale the peak. Climbers from 13 nations are taking part in the present expedition.
