5000 IN MARCH

U.K.race protest (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter— Copyright) LONDON, March 23. Some 5000 people marched through London on Sunday in what some described as Britain’s biggest race demonstration. They were protesting against the Government’s new immigration bill which savs that immigrants will have to register with the police and would place new restrictions on dependants. March leaders, chanting; "Police Control No, No,” handed in protest notes at 10 Downing Street, the official residence of the Prime Minister (Mr Edward Heath) and at the Home Office. Hundreds of police were on duty for the demonstration, organised by the Indian Workers’ Association.

Two hundred policemen ringed the Downing Street area alone.

Immigrant groups from all over Britain and some political organisations were represented in the march, which the anti-apartheid campaigner, Mr Peter Hain, described as the “biggest ever race demonstration in Britain.”
