Profit-taking takes toll of Australian exchanges

Profit-taking caused widespread falls on the mining boards on Australian stock exchanges yesterday. It seems that traders are cashing in their speculative shares while prices are up and reinvesting them in more solid stock.

Leopold closed 150 c lower at 680 c; other speculatives to lose some of their recent gains were Bamboo, with a drop of 10c to 60c; Con west shed 25c to 105 c, Laverton was marked down 15c to 40c, Lefroy eased. 20c to 170 c, Mareeba was down 7c at 88c, Murchison, which earlier traded at 90c shed, to close at 80c, Seeko dropped 9c to 35c, and Meekatharra lost 17c to 188 c. Heavy-weights were little affected by the speculative ups and downs, and most notched up worth-while gains. Peko gained 30c to 1140 c, and W.M.C. was up 13c to 493 c. C.R.A. put on a further 50c to 1210 c; Utah and New B.H. were steady. Kathleen Investments dropped 40c to 1030 c, but Queensland Mines remained steady. Oils were quiet and slightly easier. Industrials were down a little in moderate trading. B.H.P. eased 15c to 1485 c. SYDNEY tales.—Amal. Chem., 30; AmPO1„ 66; Ansett, 70; A.W.A., 125; Ass.
