FUTURE OF JERUSALEM
Criticism from Vatican (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) ROME, March 23. The Vatican newspaper, "L’Osservatore Romano,” has sharply criticised Israel for policies which, it says, are aimed at achieving de facto sovereignty over the entire city of Jerusalem. “Israeli expropriatons of former Arab areas of the city are giving Jerusalem a very different physiognomy from its historic and religious character and its universal vocation,” the newspaper says in an unsigned article. “One cannot but feel deep apprehension at changes of such gravity. Even the Jerusalem press does not attempt to conceal that it is the Israeli .Government’s intention to achieve de facto sovereignty over the whole city. “These realisations, alas, are not works of peace, and cannot leave anybody indifferent as to who is truly working for a definite peace in the Middle East.” "L’Osservatore Romano” added that Jerusalem was a very delicate subject which could prove an insuperable obstacle to any Middle East peace agreement. Pope Paul has long been deeply concerned over the fate of Jerusalem as a result of the Middle East conflict.
