5000 still in Laos
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter— i Copyright) KHE SANH, March 23. A South Vietnamese armoured column of 102 tanks, armoured carriers and trucks crossed into South Vietnam from Laos this morning after fighting its way for three days around a North Vietnamese ambush.
A military spokesman in Khe Sanh said that the number of armoured vehicles lost during the retreat was very light.
In Saigon, a military spokesman said that only about 5000 South Vietnamese troops remained in Laos, fewer than a quarter of the invading force of 22,000 men. The troops have abandoned a number of their bases along Route No. 9, and are now left with only two: Dong Da, about seven miles from the border, and Hong Ha, only two miles inside Laos.
