Playhouse approval

; Wellington's long - awaited and much - argued - about Hannah Playhouse has finally received the green light.

The Wellington City Council last week decided to divert $120,000 from its funds for a proposed civic theatre toward the $570,000 project. The decision, made in committee, will close the gap between the funds held by the Hannah Playhouse Trust Board and the total cost, which includes $120,000 for land purchase.

The construction of the twee-storey playhouse will begin almost immediately, and it should open in little more than a year. It will provide a home and a unique theatre for Downstage, which will occupy the playhouse on a 25-year lease.
