TROTTING Caledonian Garrison fancied tonight

“The Presa” Special Service AUCKLAND. The Pukekohe trainer, J. Butcher, holds a very strong hand in the Cambridge Gold Cup at the Cambridge Trotting Club’s meeting tonight. Scratchings have allowed his fine three-year-old, Mathias, which he races in partnership with his wife, back in the field. Butcher already had Caledonian Garrison engaged. There seems little doubt the combination will be the favourite, although the lineup is as good as any carded

for a race for three and four-year-olds this season. Notable among the others are True Temper, Black Watch, Fleeting Forbes, Rossi Gennari, and False Dream. Caledonian Garrison, which beat some top-ranking South Island three-year-olds in the Great Northern Derby in December, scored impressively at Alexandra Park last Wednesday. He was off 24 yards and beat True Temper (24) and Dayvander (limit) into the minor platings. A rehandicap of 24 yards should not prevent him from making another bold showing. He is a fast beginner. Mathias had none the best of the running in the race won by Caledonian Garrison last Wednesday and he did well to finish fifth. He does not look much inferior to Caledonian Garrison and has the advantage of being on the limit. True Temper will meet Caledonian Garrison on 12 vards better terms than when he lost narrowly last Wednesday. His form this season has been wonderfully consistent and he looks sure to give another good account of himself.

Black Watch might be a danger. She is on a tough mark, 36 yards, but she went a pretty good race for fourth in the Down Under Flying Mile at Alexandra Park on Saturday, when the opposition was appreciably stronger.

Black Watch easily < won the Cambridge Gold Cup last year, when she was off 24 yards. Easton Light needs only to get under way safely to be the toughest to beat in the Empire Handicap, the second leg of the T.A.B. concession double.
