VACANCY MALES MINISTRY-OF TRANSPORT RAOUL AND CAMPBELL ISLANDS EXPEDITIONS 1971/72 APPLICATIONS ARE NOW being accepted for the following positions on New Zealand’s two weather and scientific stations. Present living conditions are now of a high standard and board and lodging are free. Cook: Duties include the preparation of meals for up to 12 men and bread making. Applicants may also be required to undergo a cooking test. Salary $3219 per annum. Mechanic: A vacancy exists for a person who has had some experience in the maintenance and operation of industrial equipment which includes diesel generating plant, a tractor, and refrigerating units. Some training may be given to the successful applicant before his departure for the Island. A tool allowance will be paid to the appointee during his term of service on the Island. Present salary up to $3303 per annum as merited. RAOUL ISLAND Officer in Charge: A vacancy exists for a person to take charge of the above scientific station with a staff of nine to 10 men. Desired qualifications include good personality and powers of leadership; resourcefulness and the practical ability to run an isolated station. General experience is as for Campbell Island, and the same training would be given. Salary $4316 per annum. Technician (Telecommunications): A position is available for a person with telecommunications experience to maintain transmitters, receivers, radios and radio-telephone equipment on the station. The successful applicant would also be required to operate and maintain some scientific equipment, but training would be given in this before departing for the Island. Preference would be given to the person who has attained R.T.C., P.M.G. or had equivalent experience. Having some knowledge in electrical reticulation would also be an advantage. A tool allowance will be paid to the appointee during his term of service. Salary up to $3669 per annum as merited. Mechanic: A vacancy exists for a person who has had some experience in the maintenance and operation of equipment which includes diesel generators, refrigerating units, a truck and farm vehicles and machinery. Having some knowledge in blacksmithing, welding and plumbing would also be an advantage. A small but well equipped workshop is provided on the Island. A tool allowance will also be paid to the appointee during his term of service on the Island. Present salary up to $3303 per annum as merited. Cook: Duties include the preparation of meals for up to 10 men, jam, bread making and preserves. Applicants may also be required to undergo a cooking test Salary $3219 per annum. Farm Manager: / Duties include the maintenance of farm paddocks, the milking of up to 10 cows, and attending to a small flock of breeding ewes, a few dry cattle, a litter of pigs, and a poultry run. Desired qualifications include a sound knowledge of shearing, pasture maintenance, dipping, killing, etc., and the treatment of common stock complaints. Some knowledge of home vegetable production would also be an advantage. A dog allowance will be paid to the appointee during his period of service. Salary up to $3504 per annum as merited. Maintenance Officer: A person with good all-round practical experience is required for general labouring purposes, building and road maintenance, and assisting in duties as directed by the station officer in charge.
