MANY STOCKS RECOVER SOME OF THEIR RECENT LOSSES
A wide range of New Zealand stocks recovered some of their sharp losses of last week when buyers moved in yesterday. Leaders were the most active and they showed the best gains but a few selected second line stocks were also marked up in sympathy. Quotations were generally firm at the end of the day. <
Northern exchanges reported higher turnover on the day and this is not surprising since most of the technical pressure came from that quarter late last week. Alex Harvey at 385 c gained 10c and Feltex recovered 13c to 328 c. South British at 545 c and Property Securities at 180 c were both 5c better. Fletcher Holdings, and J. Wattie regained 4c each while Forests, N.Z.M.C. and Rothmans all firmed 3c.
B.H.P. jumped 50c to 1620 c on New Zealand exchanges after a very firm market for the shares in Australia. Consolidated Brick rights stood out among the falls with a drop of 10c to 53c after a steadily rising market last week. Golden Bay Cement continued to ease with a fall of 3c to 87c, while Skellerup came back 10c and Trans Holdings was 5c lower at 130 c.
