ITALIAN ART THEFT

Renoir, Manet works taken (N.Z.P.A. -Reuter—Copyright) MILAN (Italy), March 21. Thieves in Milan have committed Italy’s biggest art theft of the year, removing 22 paintings, including works by Renoir, Manet and Breughel, from a private collection in a restaurant. The theft occurred on Thursday night at the luxurious Isola Caprera restaurant in Lodi, 20 miles south-west of Milan. The stolen works included “Seascape, with Sailing Boat,” by J. Renoir, "An Annunciation,” by Breughel, and “A Head of a Young Girl,” by Manet. They are the property of 49-year-old restaurant owner, Mr G. Meani, who inherited them from his father. His wife said that the thieves apparently entered the restaurant to steal money and food while the couple slept in an upstairs room.
