16-HARVARD FORMATION

Celebration of long service Sixteen Harvards from the Royal New Zealand Air Force base at Wigram flew over Christchurch in formation yesterday morning to mark the thirtieth anniversary of the aircraft’s introduction into service with the R.N.Z.A.F.

The formation was led by the commanding officer of the Flying Training Wing (Wing Commander G. C. Hubbard). The first Harvards arrived in New Zealand almost 13 years after the Southern Cross made the first Tasman flight and fifteen Harvards went into service at Wigram in June, 1941. A total of 202 Harvards were brought on charge by the R.N.Z.A.F. during the Second World War; today there are about 30.
