Never on Monday
Monday morning collections of rubbish in the inner city area will stop soon. The City Council decided this last evening because of the week-end untidyness caused by many commerciay firms putting out rubbish tins on Friday evenings ready for the Monday morning rubbish collection. The works and services committee reported an increasing number of instances where commercial refuse had been strewn over central city streets during week-ends and holidays. “Apart from the fact that,
to visitors, Christchurch would appear to be a very untidy city, there is also a contravention of the Utter Act,” the committee stated. “Refuse tins placed on the edge of the footpath over the week-end are fair game for youthful revellers and also the vagaries of Christchurch weather. “It seems that the only way in which this could be overcome would be to discontinue the Monday morning collection thereby forcing business firms to refrain from their practice of leaving tins out on Friday nights.”
