Australian by-election
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) CANBERRA, March 22. Australia’s ruling LiberalCountry Party coalition was delighted today by the Country Party’s by-election victory in the rural Victorian seat of Murray, to fill the vacancy caused by the retirement of the former Country Party Leader, Sir John McEwen. The by-election was the first measure of public reaction to the Government crisis in which the new Prime Minister (Mr McMahon) unseated the former Liberal leader, Mr John Gorton. . t The Country Party and the Liberal Party secured about 63 per cent of the total formal vote in the Murray byelection. This compared with 67.25 per cent for the combined Country Party and Independent Liberal vote at the last General Election, in 1969, when there was considerable personal support for Sir John McEwen, who had held the seat for 22 years. Mr B. Lloyd (Country Party) won the Murray seat, defeating Mr J. Riordan (Aust. Labour), Mr B. Hunter (Liberal), Mr B. V. Lacey (Democratic Laboqr) and Mr M. J. Flynn (Independent).
