“Maori grievances”

Sir,—Under the heading, “Maori grievances,” you report a distinguished speaker: “Our land is where our ancestors lived and died, perhaps defending the tribal land. The blood of our ancestors is soaked into this land.” Any student of Maori history knows that by far the greater part of this blood was shed by Maoris seeking, for revenge or pure greed of power, to take the land of other Maoris. The warring tribes of Britain did just the same until first Alfred and then William, the foreign conqueror, persuaded them that unity under the law of right was better than diversity under the threat of might. I yield to none in my admiration for the Maori and admit our many failings; but litck of homework and too

much emotional oratory do not help race relations.— Yours, etc., R. R. BEAUCHAMP. March 22, 1971.
