C.O.R.S.O. target up this year

The fund-raising target for the Canter-bury-West Coast branch of C.0.R.5.0. has been lifted to $112,000 this year. This is an increase of $22,000 on last year’s figure.

The assistant district organiser for the region (Mrs J. Ritchie) said yesterday that the Christchurch C.0.R.5.0. committee was optimistic that this target would be reached. Income went down in 1970, and the target this year is not much greater than the amount raised in 1969. The committee believed that there was a growing interest and concern about the needs in other countries, said Mrs Ritchie. “To reach the national target this year comes down to asking each household to give approximately 85c,” she said. “If we received $1 from every household then we would be able to meet all our commitments for development overseas. If people oould project

their minds to imagine what a dollar will do for a family they wouldn’t feel the pinch,” she said.

Sixty per cent of the proposed $122,000 to be raised this year will be spent in New Zealand on agricultural equipment, woollen goods, dairy products and livestock to be sent overseas, and on workers’ training programmes and other developmental projects such as the wholemilk biscuit scheme.

Since the beginning of February the Christchurch depot had shipped 69 bales of clothing to India, Vietnam and Hong Kong. Another 26 bales and 11 cases were due to leave from Lyttelton for Korea within a week said Mrs Ritchie.
