RECORD GATE AT METHVEN SHOW

The brilliantly fine weather and an unusually large number of exhibitors and exhibits produced record gate takings and possibly a record crowd at the Methven Agricultural and Pastoral Show at Methven on Saturday. Takings for the day totalled $896, which was well over the previous record figure of $B6B reached in 1966. Although the ground was hard the horse riders in most categories performed skilfully. In Group A the judge, Mrs R. Bain, said the standard was exceptionally high and the best she had judged. The top 10 were of : a very high standard and : compared with standards reached at any other show in the country. In Group B the ponies were poorly ridden by riders, who appeared lethargic, in contrast to the riders in Group C, who were enthusiastic, she said. The cattle entry was small and well down on last year’s figure. Only 29 cattle were entered. The dry conditions at the moment affected the size of the entry said the judge, Mr H. Greenaway, but the cattle entered were in god condition. The winner in the fencing championship, Mr R. Calder, of Little River, will be sponsored in the national championships to be held in Hamilton in June. This was the first time the event had been held at the show and will now be a regular feature.
