Nicholl narrowly misses national hammer record

The New Zealand hammer throwing champion, W. J. Nicholl (Technical), failed by only nine inches to break the national record during the final Canterbury inter-club track and field meeting at Rugby Park on Saturday.

Nicholl, who set the present record of 195 ft 4in in the recent New Zealand championship at Inglewood, sent the hammer out 194 ft 7in on his fourth attempt The burly Christchurch police sergeant also had two other throws of more than 190 ft He recorded 188 ft 9in on his first throw and followed this with 193 ft 9in, 192 ft 7in, 194 ft 7in, a no throw, and 184 ft 3in. The long jump was. won by W. Jowett (UniversityShirley) with an impressive leap of 22ft sin. Jowett was runner-up to D. S. Norris

(Auckland) in the national championship. One record was broken. The boys’ under 17 4 x 400 metres relay was won by University-Shirley in 3min 37sec. The previous best time stood at 3min 40.9 sec. All pupils of Shirley Boys’ High School, the boys, E. Hamilton, R. Barrett, J. Thornton, and R. Lindsay, were trained by the president of the Canterbury coaches’ association (Mr T. I. Crossen).
