Attitude to wage bill

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, March 21. Despite trades councils in other centres encouraging stoppages in.recent weeks as the result of the wage bill before Parliament, the Auckland Trades Council decided last night—“after a long and sometimes heated discussion” —that the matter of protests be left to individual affiliates.

On Friday the council president (Mr T. E. Skinner) said the decision was unanimous, and during discussion there was no indication that individual unions would stage protest stoppages. Asked if the stand was a moderate one, Mr Skinner said “No, it’s not moderate. It’s a sensible attitude.”

Referring to the action of other councils, he said: "That’s their business.” The Auckland decision differed because “the others have not had anyone readily available to explain the bill properly.”
