United win and draw

Christchurch United had a handsome win and a goalless draw in Wellington at the week-end, in the club’s buildup for the Rothmans National Soccer League championship, which begins on April 3. On hard, rough grounds, United outplayed last season’s Gillette Chatham Cup finalist, Western Suburbs, 4-0, and then yesterday drew 0-0 with the new combined team, Wellington City, formed by Hungaria and Miramar Rangers. The United striker, M. Ellis, scored three of the goals against Western Suburbs, and T. Randles added the other.

Despite having its second game in successive days,

United had the measure of Wellington City yesterday, but was denied victory by the brilliant play of the City goal-keeper. The United coach, T. Conley, was delighted with, the team’s performances. “We have been playing a wee bit better in every game and there is no doubt the players are fit and confident for the coming season,” he said last evening. “The whole team was in excellent form against Suburbs, and although I expected the players to be tired in the second half against Wellington City, they then produced probably the highest standard of team play in both games."
