W. Indian has great debut

(N.Z.P-A.-Reuter—Copyright) GEORGETOWN. A magnificent international debut by D. Lewis, strongly supported by the veteran, L. S. Gibbs, helped the West Indies to score 363 in its first innings of the third test with India at Bourda on Saturday.

In reply, India was 114 for one at the close of play on the second day, with S. Gavaskar 48 not out At one stage the West Indies was 256 for eight, but Lewis and Gibbs, ir. an eighthwicket partnership which yielded 84 runs, brought their team back into the game and enabled the West Indians to make their highest score of the series so far. STANDING OVATION When the last batsman, J. Noreiga, was run out for nine, Lewis was 81 not out, and

received a standing ovation. Gibbs had scored 25 when the partnership was broken. The Indians, leading 1-0 after their victory in Trinidad, started their first innings confidently and the openers, A. Mankad and Gavaskar, had scored 72 before Mankad was bowled by Noreiga. The pitch had little pace in it and Mankad and Gavaskar were able to take severe toll of any errors the bowlers made in either length or direction. However, both survived chances. Gavaskar, as he is prone to do, flashed at a ball from G. Shillingford and was put down at second slip by G. S. Sobers. He was then only six.

Mankad, when 21, also snicked to second slip but this chance was more difficult and C. Davis only just got his finger tips to the ball. Scores: WEST INDIES First innings R.
