Quality stock highlight of Hawarden Show

Good entries of quality stock, special displays, increased gate takings, and sunny weather with temperatures in the high seventies, combined to make the Hawarden Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s annual show on Saturday an enjoyable day for both competitors and visitors.

In contrast to last year when rain marred the show, causing several competitors to scratch and reducing gate takings to $B6, the fine day on Saturday brought hundreds of people to the showgrounds in the Hawarden township and gate takings rose to $220, $l4 more than in 1969. By midday many sun umbrellas had blossomed around the ring as a large crowd gathered to watch the horse events, while others strolled round the grounds to inspect the big yarding of sheep and displays of machinery, produce, home craft, flowers, school children’s work, and historical items. Competitors and their animals, many wearing prize ribbons, made a colourful display in the ring during the grand parade, which was led by Derry’s Brass Band, of Christchurch. The Hawarden district is renowned for the quality of its fine-woolled sheep and in the big sheep section Corriedales predominated.

Entries in the open classes for Corriedale rams were very pleasing considering the dry conditions facing breeders in the Hawarden area, said the judge iMr K. V. Hood>. The champion rams and the best ram hogget were both outstanding animals A disappointing feature, however, was that good sheep had to be passed over because they had turned in feet, he said.

A pair of outstanding two-tooth ewes was a feature of the section for Corriedale ewes in natural condition, said the judge (Mr R. C. OvertonK The Corriedale breed again gained merit when a Corriedale ewe fleece entered by W. F. Dixon and Sons was judged the best entry in the wool section. The judge (Mr B. R. Grimmett, of Omihi) said that the fleece was of good character, colour and quality.

In spite of the dry weather the Southdown ewes were generally of good quality and the wool a good length, said the judge (Mr N. J. Moorhead, of Southbridge). The Romney judge (Mr R. Reid) said the sheep exhibited were well up to standard.

Although entries in the fat sheep section were few because of the dry weather, the stock shown was good and children’s pets were exceptionally good, said the judge (Mr J. W. R. Dawson, of Darfield). Hereford and Aberdeen Angus cattle were the only breeds represented in the small cattle section. Mr R. A. Park, who judged the beasts, said that in some of the Hereford classes competition between first and second placings was very close. Horse and pony classes were well supported and competition was keen in many. The champion hack of the show, B. J. Black’s and Mrs R. G. Gardner’s Scotch Whisky is enjoying a successful show season after being brought back into the ring recently. Formerly a show horse it retired and was later used for some time as a polo pony. On Saturday it was also judged the best hack up to 11 stone, the best lady’s hack and the best paced and mannered hack. The reserve champion hack and

best maiden hack was K. R. and Mrs Clifton’s Corkscrew. Exciseman, a former racehorse which is having its first season in the show ring was judged the champion hunter. It is owned by S. G. Rutherford. Reserve was Mrs G. West’s Dusky Bay. A well-known cob, Mrs L. Bush’s Prince Robin received its seventieth championship ribbon when it won the award for the champion cob. The Bush family was again successful when Royal Ascot owned by L. and K. Bush was judged the champion harness pony. Miss V. M. Willis’s Melody Maid was judged the best pony in Group A and Miss J. Whiteman’s Tanita, the champion in group B. A special display at the show which attracted a good deal of interest was an exhibit of historical items by the Waipara County Historical Society. Another attractive display included pottery and wool craft. Entries of work done by school children nearly doubled compared with last year. Two traction engines, both more than 60 years old and in immaculate condition, were a feature of the machinery exhibition. Results were:— CHAMPIONS Horses Hack.—B. H. Black’s and Mrs R. G. Gardner’s Scotch Whisky; reserve, K. R. and Mrs Clifton’s Corkscrew. Hunter: S. G. Rutherford’s Exciseman; reserve, Mrs G. West’s Dusky Bay. Cob: Mrs L. Bush’s Prince Robin. Harness pony: L. and K.
