The first graduation ceremony has been recorded at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station. On February 15 the commander of the United States Navy Antarctic support force (RearAdmiral D. F. Welch) presented Commander J. B. Dana with his B.A. diploma in political science.
It took Commander Dana about 20 years of sparetime study to earn sufficient credits for his degree.
Commander Dana said, of the ceremony at the South Pole: “This was probably the shortest graduation ceremony ever conducted. I walked round the world, received my diploma from the admiral,
said a few words of thanks, and it was all done in less than 30 seconds.” While based at Quonset Point Rhode Island, the home base of the squadron, Commander Dana enrolled in night classes at the University of Rhode Island.
