Y.M.C.A. leader to visit
The Rev. F. Franklin, a Swedish Baptist minister who has been generalsecretary of the World Alliance of Young Men’s Christian Associations since 1962, will visit Christchurch from March 19 to 22 in the course of a tour of New Zealand.
He will preach at services to be held in the Oxford Terrace Baptist Church and Christchurch Cathedral. Mr Franklin who was born in India, where his parents were missionaries, received his education in Sweden and was ordained as a minister of the Baptist Church of Sweden in 1937. Two years later he went to India as a missionary teaching in a seminary and conducting youth work. In 1943 he was invited to take charge of Y.M.C.A. services with prisoners of war in India and later in Burma, serving about 225,000 men, mainly Italians and Japanese. From 1948 he worked with the Indian Y.M.C.A.
In 1958 he was appointed general-secretary of the Y.M.C.A. in Sweden, a position he held until he began his service with the World Alliance. He is the author of seven books, most of them in Swedish.
