Man makes $l000 gift

An elderly man called at “The Press” office yesterday determined to give away $lOOO. The man, Mr D. N. Treleaven, of Lower Styx Road, had a cheque in his hand made out to “Crippled Children, Avonside.”

A quick call brought the Crippled Children Society’s secretary to “The Press” office—but it turned out that Mr Treleaven really wanted to make the gift to the Intellectually Handicapped Children’s Society, which has an appeal for a $120,000 pre-school and special-care centre at Avonside.

Mr Treleaven’s cheque, from the Belfast Post Office, was accordingly altered, and enthusiastically received by the right secretary—Mrs M. L. Ber-

nacchi—who expressed the Intellectually Handicapped Children’s Society’s thanks, and said it would be a great boost to the appeal. Mr Treleaven left "The Press” office to buy a pie for lunch.
