Admiral says good-bye
The commander of the United States Navy Antarctic support force (RearAdmiral D. F. Welch) yesterday said good-bye to the Antarctic during a brief visit to McMurdo Station. In a few months he will relinquish the Antarctic command for a post in the Pentagon.
Admiral Welch left Christchurch aboard a Navy Hercules yesterday afternoon for the formal closing of the summer season’s activities at McMurdo Station. He is due back early this morning. Left behind to spend the winter in the Antarctic are about 200 scientists and servicemen who will be without physical contact with the world outside until October. Aboard the admiral’s plane was the last load of mail and fresh provisions. On Monday Admiral Welch, his wife, and key staff officers will leave Christchurch for the return flight to Washington. The last aircraft of the summer season will depart for the United States on March 10. There are about 500 men at the Navy base at Christchurch Airport yet to be flown home. After March 10 only 40 servicemen will remain to maintain essential services at the base during the winter.
