Dairy, prime lamb, and beef cattle
Dairying combined with prime lamb production is the chief industry on the Kaikoura flats. The top picture illustrates the fine dairying conditions. Surplus milk from the town supply scheme is used by the local butter factory, which was famous a few years ago for its high quality cheese. All town supply milk is transported by tankers to Blenheim daily for pasteurisation, which has overcome the problem of stomach disorders among holiday children, particularly babies, in recent years. Beef cattle production (see picture above) has increased considerably on Kaikoura coastal runs in recent years, and the demand for breeding stock is at a high level. Last spring five registered beef cattle breeders staged Kaikoura's first bull sale. This offering of Hereford and Angus bulls is now to become an annual fixture.
