Cup picks go well in trial
“The Pre««” Special Service PALMERSTON NORTH. The Rangitikel Cup candidates, Silver Knight and Aristae, which stand out on form for the Rangitikel Cup, ran a mile at Awapuni yesterday but were not asked for their best. Working 50 feet out on the course proper, which was soft, Silver Knight was doing best at the end of a mile in Imin 56sec, the last three in 43sec. Silver Knight had the best of the weights. Neither has shown to advantage in soft ground in the past, and if the rain continues—which seems likely—there may be an upset in the cup. Mediate and Menace went over six furlongs in imin 26sec. No decision has been made as to which race Mediate will contest, but it is expected he will start in the Flockhouse Handicap, with D. Foley taking the mount. Kaukapakapa was better than Arkoi over six furlongs, the last live in Imin 12sec. Kaukapakapa has missed some racing because of a foot infection but has recovered. He should race boldly in the ■ Maungatapu Handicap, but will improve with the race. Gold Mint, a leading highweight candidate, went with Filament and Mess Time over a mile in Imin 55sec, the last three furlongs in Msec. On the inside trial, Wae- ■ renga hit out well over six ' furlongs in Imin 22sec, the i last three in 40 2-ssec. She - won well against similar com--1 pany at Hawera and looks ‘ likely to be a danger again . in the Pukehou High-weight.
