HAZLETT SALE DISAPPOINTING

(from Our Own Reporter) INVERCARGILL. Disappointed and angry visitors, some from far afield, were an the road back to Invercargill long before the end of the Chelandry Stud site in Southland yesterday.

What had been announced as a dispersal sale was in reality a selected deplenishing sale and most of the choice lots will remain in the ownership of W. E. Hazlett. To the surprise of no-one a solitary $lOO,OOO bid failed to buy the imported stallion, Lomond, and a bid of $3OOO for the associate stallion. Royal Student, was also unsuccessful. However, Hawa was allowed to go for $5OO and the $3OO offered for Bdtagioca was sufficient to obtain a sale. Of the 62 lots offered at the Chelandry Stud at Taramoa, 27 were passed in. There was quite an ah- of unreality about the proceedings after the quickfire decision about Lomond’s future. Later the Melbourne bloodstock agent, Mr J. Shannon, paid $lO,OOO for the broodmare Arctic Light (Martian 11—Honey Light) with a colt foal, Sucaryl, and in foal to Lionhearted.

SMART FILLY Shannon made two more purchases at the morning sale for a further outlay of $5600 . and at the Riverton Race- ’ course yesterday afternoon he treat to $15,000 to ' secure the two-year-old filly, - Caledonian Lass. Caledonian Lass belongs to the first crop by Lomond and is this season's , Dunedin Champagne Stakes winner. Mr Shannon said yesterday he had bought Caledonian Lass for an Australian client, but the filly would be spelled in New Zealand before joining a Sydney stable. Pole Star, which would have been one of the big attractions of the afternoon sale, was passed in at $9OOO, and it is believed that Mr Hazlett .had placed a reserve of $25,000 on him. Another disappointment was the withdrawal from the sale eff the five-year-old, Free Frenchman, which shaped like a future Grand National

winner in winning three hack steeplednses at the last Grand National meeting. The third top price for the day was $6250 paid by Mrs R. Dailey. of Christchurch, for the brood mare. Rich Light, which had a Kurdistan filly foal at foot. Mrs Dailey is a daughter of Mr Hazlett: Details of sales $6OO and above were:— YEAIK.INCS £
