Concern over rates
Concern at the way in which legislation on the liability to rates of some university property had been promoted and passed was expressed at the annual meeting of Ward 11 of the Counties Association yesterday by the Waimairi County Council representative (Mr D. B. Rich).
After association representations, legislation had provided for grants in lieu of rates on university property, Mr Rich said. But one institution in Waimairi County had got legislation passed so it was not affected in this way. The legislation now specifically excluded the property concerned, retrospectively, so the county was worse off than ever.
The Waimairi county clerk (Mr J. Reid) said that the institution was a church hall of residence which the council maintained should be a rateable property. The meeting took no action.
