WOMEN’S BOWLS
Seven left in singles
Three previous winners of the event are among the seven survivors of yesterday’s five rounds in the Christchurch Women’s Bowling Centre’s champion of champions singles tournament.
They are Mesdames L. Gaskin (Opawa), J. Rennie (Rangiora), both of whom are still two-lifers, and M. McGettigan (Spreydon), a onelifer.
Mrs J. Drummond (Riccarton Racecourse) was a third player to come through yesterday’s rounds unbeaten and the others still in contention with one life are Mesdames V. Ferguson (Burwood), E. Merrin (Morrison Avenue) and M. Happer (Dunsandel). The tournament will continue on the Morrison Avenue green this morning, with Mrs Rennie, the title-holder, having a bye through the first round.
Yesterday’s play was at St Albans, and although the wind complicated matters in the afternoon, there were many close games as the original entry of 39 was whittled down to seven.
The women’s first-year players’ tournament also began yesterday and three twolifers arid six one-lifers survived. The two-lifers are Mesdames S. Smith (Rangiora), H. Young (Kirwee), and D. Oliver (Morrison Avenue); the one-lifers, Mesdames J. Packwood (St Martins), G. Wilson (St Albans), M. Webster (Shaw Avenue), J. Forward (Spreydon), L. Taylor (South Brighton) and F. Barr (Riccarton Womnjs. This competition will also end at Morrison Avenue today.
