Kanhai foils India’s hid

R. B. Kanhai’s unbeaten 158 and his 173-run fourth-wicket partnership with his skipper, G. S. Sobers (93), helped the West Indies recover from a first-innings humiliation and draw the first test with India at Sabina Park yesterday.
Following-on 170 runs nings of 387, the West behind India’s first inIndies had scored 384 for five when the match ended. The hero of the West Indies recovery was Kanhai, who was at the crease nearly six hours and a half and hit 117 fours. He and Sobers were engaged in one of the rare big partnerships between these two great batsmen.
Kanhai’s 158 was his thirteenth test century and his fourth against India in the 14 matches he has played against the side. Sobers, also playing his fourteenth test against India, and Kanhai came together when the third wicket fell at 147 and with the West Indies still needing 23 runs to save an innings defeat. saw their team out ofdanger and took the West Indies total to 320 before Sobers was caught at the wicket attempting to square cut off Solkar.
