Returns and costs rise
The Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association made a surplus of $2032 last year, according to the annual report of the association.
This was a little below the $22.64 surplus in 1969, but the report said that it was still a satisfactory outcome.
Increases in returns from the show, the ram fairs, the motor camp and the letting of the grounds had helped to offset, in part, the general rise in costs. Nevertheless, the surplus was only a very modest return on the association’s fixed assets, which were valued in the balance sheet at $479,000. The report said that the association’s centennial appeal had officially closed at the end of June. The result had been regarded by the consultants as outstanding. More than 98 per cent of promises had been met and the total cash received, at $156,120, was more than $26,000 in excess of the appeal target.
“BEST SHEEP SECTION” Many people considered that last year’s show was the best the association had ever put on, said the report Perhaps the most pleasing comment had been that of Mr O. Coibum, the leading British authority on sheep, who had described the sheep section as the best in the world. He had been impressed particularly by the range of breeds and the consistently high quality of the sheep exhibited. Mr J. M. Chamberlain will succeed Mr J. R. Todhunter as president this year. Mr C. N. Mackenzie will become vice-president and Mr A. H. Gould will remain honorary treasurer.
There will be an election for the general committee as there have been 25 nominations for the 24 seats.
