“Minor matters” at Progress League

Too much attention was being paid by the Canterbury Progress League to matters of minor public interest, a meeting of the League was told last evening, during discussion on an approach made by the League to the Ministry of Transport over road signs in Park Terrace.

“I would be very dis-: appointed if much more of this type of thing has to come before us,” Dr W. R. Holmes said. A voice: There is far too much attention being given to matters that could best be handled by a private individual.”

The chairman (Mr E. H. Wiliiams) assured Dr’Holmes that no attempt was made to “pad” the agenda. League’s finances

In discussion on the finances of the league, during which it was mentioned that its representatives would attend a meeting with metropolitan local bodies, certain members were outspoken in opposition to any attempt to increase subscriptions to the league from local bodies. i

“My council is not the only one dissatisfied with the league at this time,” said Mr A. Y. Shuker, of the Paparua County Council. Mr G. R. Burrows said he was alarmed at the expense of running the league. “We should have second thoughts at approaching local bodies for more money,” he said. Six years ago the league had said that it would try to stand on its own feet. “But we are not. Over 70 per cent lof our finance is coming from local bodies,” Mr Burrows said. “If you go into the lions’ den now, you will probably lose completely the subscriptions from local bodies,” he said. Attendance criticised Earlier in the meeting, the chairman had criticised the inadequate attendance at meetings of the league. “Matters of importance to the future of Canterbury are being discussed by the league, and members should attend,” he said. The meeting had been delayed more than 25 minutes to await the arrival of enough members to form la quorum of 20.
