Recollection of 1866
A correspondent has drawn attention to the incorrect attribution of a statement in a contributed article on Major Alfred Hornbrook, of Mount Pleasant, which was printed on this page on December 27, 1969. In a libel action brought against Major Hornbrook in 1866, the plaintiff alleged that Major Hornbrook had said publicly of him that he would not believe the plaintiff-—a stock agent—“if he swore on a pile of Bibles as high as the Kaikouras.” Our contributor inadvertently ascribed the comment to the stock agent The jury found for the Major.
