Sydney buyer spends $50,000 at sales

Mr R. Ingham, of Sydney, who spent $21,850 for 11 lots on Thursday, was again active in the market for quality stock on the second day of the national sale of standardbred yearlings in Christchurch yesterday.

Yesterday Mr Ingham spent another $29,000 to secure 10 yearlings. Among his purchases was the high-est-priced colt of the day and the second-highest priced colt of the sales. He went to $BOOO for an attractive youngster by Garrison Hanover from the U. Scott mare, Rosslyn Rowan. The Ingham purchases were all colts and, as on the first day, one was knocked down to Mrs Ingham. The vendor of.the toppriced colt, which is a close relation to Orbiter and several other good winners, was the Kenwood Stud, Wellington.

A sale which had many dull moments, because of frequent passings, brightened up considerably for a period shortly after launch when in a space of about 10 minutes Mr Ingham spent more than $13,000 to secure three consecutive lots.

Several other Australians were active buyers, among them the Sydney timber merchant, Mr J. Honan, who on the first day paid $9OOO for a Garrison HanoverGolden Circle colt. He made only one purchase yesterday but his participation in proceedings cost him $6500 for a well-developed chestnut colt by Garrison Hanover from the grand race-mare, Patchwork.

Mr Honan was right in the market to make another costly purchase but he was not prepared to meet the high reserve set by the vendor. The Sydney trainer, K. Newman, acting for Mr Honan, went to $7OOO for a colt by Good Chase from Timid, offered on behalf of Mrs M. E. Holmes, of Christchurch, before capitulating. The reserve on the colt was $BOOO. Buyer and vendor reached agreement on the top-priced filly of the day which would have probably passed out of the ring had they not split the difference between the reserve and the offer “down the middle."

The representative of the Wellington-based Central Standardbred Agency ceased bidding on a daughter of

Garrison Hanover and the Fallacy mare Phillmark, offered on behalf of Mr E. J. Donnithorne, of Christchurch, at $4OOO. The auctioneers explained that Mr Donnithorne had already reduced his reserve on the filly to $6OOO but after it seemed certain that no sale would be made the vendor decided to accept $5OOO and the filly changed hands. Altogether Australians bought 39 lots yesterday for a total of $68,500, an average of $1756. Another overseas buyer was Mr A. J. Leavitt, of New York. He paid $2lOO to secure a daughter of Gc .d Chase and the Van Dieman Mare, Van Brabant As on the first day several lucrative offers were turned down by vendors and consequently the average for this year’s sales was well below the corresponding figure 12 months ago. Over the two days 181 lots changed hands for a total of $266,705, an average of $1474. Last year 135 lots sold for a total of $236,100, a record average of $1748.
