AUCKLAND, Feb. 16.
The first diversion of water from the Wanganui River catchment area into Lake Tekapo and the Waikato River hydro-electric power station system will take' place on Tuesday. Water released from the Otamangakau dam will give New Zealand its first return in the slBom Tongariro power-development 1 project. The return will come! when the water helps to generate electricity on the eight Waikato River stations. About 50 cusecs of water will be release on Tuesday (engineers estimate that each cusec of Waikato River water produces about $2400 worth of power annually). The Taurewa Ministry of Works resident engineer (Mr A. T. Hinkley) said that Tuesday’s event was of great significance. “It means that the Ministry of Works will be able to give the Electricity Department for the first time water from the Wanganui River catchment area if it is needed.
When the huge project is completed in 1975, the Wanganui River water will flow from Lake Rotoaira through a tunnel to a power station at Tokaanu, and run into Lake Taupo.
