(N.Z. Press Association)
NEW PLYMOUTH, Feb. 14. The man who served as the model and inspiration for the character “Gus” in the “Me and Gus” stories of Frank Anthony died at his home at Midhurst, near Stratford, on Friday. He was Mr Ralph Charles (Gus) Carroll, who had lived on the Denbeigh Road, Midhurst, for the last 70 years except for service in the First World War. He was 75.
After returning from the war, Mr Carroll began working on his farm opposite that of Mr Anthony, and the two became friends.
