PERSIAN GULF
Withdrawal report

LONDON, Feb. 14.
Britain has decided to withdraw from the Persian Gulf, probably by the end of the year, according to diplomatic sources in London, who say that an official announcement of the decision is expected soon.
AH that would remain of Britain’s former dominant military role in the rich and strategically important area would be a token naval representation, by a few small naval craft, the sources say. The Conservative Government has reached the decision after much hestitation and on-the-spot consultations over the past few months with leaders of the Gulf nations. The decision contrasts with that to maintain a military presence east of Suez, a subject which will shortly be discussed in London talks with Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, and New Zealand about the establishment of a FivePower Far Eastern force.
