Lon Nol leaves for Hawaii
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) PHNOM PENH, Feb. 14. The Cambodian Prime Minister, General Lon Nol, left Phnom Penh yesterday in a United States Air Force plane bound for Hawaii.
There he will be treated for after-effects of a stroke which he suffered on Monday. The Cambodian leader was brought to Pochetong Airport, outside Phnom Penh, in an ambulance with curtains drawn. Cambodian military policemen manhandled reporters trying to cover his departure.
General Lon Nol was seen off at the airport by the United States Ambassador (Mr Emory Swank). He had been treated by American military doctors who had flown to Cambodia from Saigon.
General Lon Nol is expected to be away from Cambodia for weeks and possibly months. His posts as Prime Minister and Minister of Defence are temporarily in the hands of his Deputy Prime Minister, Sisowath Sirik Matak.. Earlier General Lon Nol appealed to the people of Cambodia to persevere in the fight against "North Vietnamese imperialist aggression” and support the Deputy Prime Minister.
