Wool-handling winner

(N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, Feb. 7. A young Balclutha man R. Davis, won the title of ‘*New Zealand wool-handler of the year” and a return trip to Sydney against stern competition in the annual event at Balclutha at the week-end.

Davis handled his five fleeces in smin 53.45ec and gained 86 points for the quality of his work to win from O. Browne (Milton) who gained 85.48 points and missed the title only because he was ssec over the time standard of 6min 15sec

A. Senior (Lumsden), a brother of last year’s title-holder, gained 84 points for third place, and I McNeill (Kaiapoi).-who also finished well up in last year’s event, was fourth with 82 points. Several top names in the shearing world appeared among the winning teams for the 1971 shearing and wool-handling contest. The contest was won by a team consisting of D. Holland B. Quinn D. Edwards (table), H. Brown (board), in the time of 9min B.lsec and with a points total of 260.13. The runner-up was a team including M. Brown, G. Pope, G. Senior (table) and A. Senior (board). The Otago open shearing championship was won for the fourth time by the title-holder B. Quinn (Alexandra). He won from R. Howes who was runnerup in the Golden Shears senior event in 1967.
